The Department of Human Development and Psychological Counseling (HPC), in the Reich College of Education at Appalachian State University invites applications for the position of Department Chair and professor at the Associate or Full Professor level. This is a 9- month tenured position with additional administrative duties during the entire fiscal year. Appointment begins July 1, 2019.
The Department of Human Development and Psychological Counseling has 4 graduate degree programs: a) Student Affairs Administration (CAS standards aligned ), b) Clinical Mental Health Counseling (CACREP accredited) , c) Marriage and Family Therapy (COAMFTE accredited), and d) Professional School Counseling (CACREP accredited) along with 3 graduate certificate programs; a) Addictions Counseling, b) Expressive Arts Therapy and c) Systemic Multicultural Counseling. The HPC department includes 17 full-time faculty and 2 full time staff members along with 175 graduate students recruited worldwide. In collaboration with the Center for Student Involvement and Leadership, the Department of HPC offers an undergraduate minor in Leadership Studies. Position Summary: This position requires knowledge of curriculum development, policy development, student learning outcomes, program reviews, schedule development, and enrollment management strategies. The chair will continue to develop and maintain a culture of collaboration, collegiality, and commitment to social justice and inclusion. The chair will serve as the primary advocate for the department within the college, university, state, and internationally. In addition, they will teach one course per semester. Hold a doctoral degree in a related discipline (i.e., Counseling/Counselor Education, Marriage and Family Therapy, and/or Student Affairs Administration or related field)
Have a record of demonstrated leadership experience in one of the above disciplines
Have a record of exemplary teaching, evidence of strong scholarship, and service appropriate for associate or professor rank
Possess effective interpersonal and collaborative management skills necessary for providing department leadership within the college and university
Demonstrate commitment and experience working with diverse populations and a commitment to social justice and inclusion
Areas of interest, but no minimum level required:
Experience with budgeting, personnel, program evaluation, resource management and scheduling
Possess a strong understanding of student affairs in higher education
Holds credentials in their respective discipline
Record of securing and supporting grants
Experience providing supervision to master’s level counseling/therapist students
Experience serving on editorial boards
Evidence of contribution/leadership with professional associations
Experience working in a school, clinical, or student affairs setting
Experience with mental health licensure boards
Familiarity with accreditation processes
