SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS SOUGHT ORANGE COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA
The Orange County Board of Education is seeking a superintendent to lead the school system as it continues its pursuit of excellence. Candidates must meet the legal requirements to be licensed as a superintendent in North Carolina or be qualified to serve under the State Board of Education’s alternative guidelines. Central office and building-level experience are preferred. A doctorate degree or progress toward a doctorate degree is preferred but not required. A successful candidate will be required to live within the boundaries of the Orange County Schools attendance area. Applications are due by July 7, 2019.
A successful candidate must demonstrate ability and success in (1) visionary educational leadership; (2) leading educational equity change efforts; (3) curriculum and instruction; (4) goal-setting and monitoring achievement; (5) fostering community and intergovernmental partnerships; (6) organization and administration of short-term and long-term strategic planning, budgeting, and personnel and facilities management; (7) strong communication skills and effective team-building, including across multiple lines of difference; (8) redistricting schools; (9) visibility and involvement in community activities; (10) maintaining safe school environments; (11) planning and funding of school facilities; (12) decision-making, delegation, and follow-through; and (13) developing engaging achievement-focused school cultures.
The Orange County Board of Education consists of seven members elected to four-year terms. The Orange County School System serves approximately 7,500 students in prekindergarten through twelfth grade. The district operates seven elementary schools (including year-round, global, and STEM schools of choice), three middle schools, two traditional high schools (offering comprehensive AP, IB, and CTE programs), and one alternative school. In partnership with the community, the school system is beginning a comprehensive effort to achieve more equitable outcomes for all students, with the recent unanimous passage of one of the first equity policies in the state, the creation of a Chief Equity Officer position, and an investment in equity-focused professional development for staff. The board is especially proud of recent gains in student achievement, graduation rates, and SAT/ACT scores, as well as successful pre-K, literacy, leadership, arts, and CTE programs.
