Job Summary Michigan Virtual is seeking an experienced IT professional with a proven track record of leadership to join our growing organization. Our ideal candidate is experienced and highly qualified in leading high performing IT teams while cultivating a culture of accountability and transparency. The Executive Director of Information Technology will strategize, plan, manage, and direct operational activities related to mission-critical IT systems. The Executive Director will work closely with leaders in other departments to identify, implement, and support cost-effective technology solutions. The person is an executive-level employee and in cooperation with other senior leaders advises the corporate Officers on all aspects of the company.
In this role, the Executive Director of IT will lead three teams, including Infrastructure Services, Technology Integrations and Learning Applications to ensure systems meet or exceed the needs of our internal and external customers efficiently and reliably. To be successful, the Executive Director of IT will need to work closely with business unit leaders, acting as a true partner and making IT a business enabler. The ideal candidate will have proven skills in information management systems, IT security, software development, and budgeting, as well as project and risk management. The selected individual will also have excellent cross-functional and communication skills to collaborate with other staff and stakeholders and demonstrate professional relationships and ongoing learning to maintain a current understanding of best practices, emerging issues, and future trends in educational technology.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Executive Management Duties:
Provides strong leadership in personnel matters related to staff management and team building for 15 employees including staffing assignments, performance reviews and professional development strategies.
Proactively consult/advise with executive leaders on the emerging technologies and digital trends that are most relevant to the company’s core needs and future goals, as well as advise on technologies utilized by other organizations.
Participates in strategic decision-making on aspects of the company business, providing leadership with respect to information systems, IT security, and technology focused on advancing Michigan Virtual’s ability to meet its goals, mission, and vision.
Represents Michigan Virtual at external meetings and serves as a lead spokes-person on information systems and analytics, security, and technology infrastructure.
Fosters collaborative working relationships within the assigned teams and with all other business units to create an alignment and shared vision for success and to ensure the information, security and technology infrastructure needs for programs, products and services are delivered in a productive, consistent, and timely basis.
Identifies, establishes, and maintains the required major systems, applications, processes, and staffing needed to provide the information, security, and technology systems to support Michigan Virtual operations.
Exercises budget control and project management to ensure positive functional and financial performance of the assigned staff and services. Develops multi-year and annual business plans, including objectives, budgets, and operational practices.
Establishes and updates policies in information management, IT security, and IT infrastructure in collaboration with other executive management leaders and the President/CEO.
Review existing systems, develop a blueprint and design/recommend/implement improvements to create a scalable architecture that fits the company’s operations.
Set up organizationally accessible testing and development environments as well as standard operating procedures and support for such environment.
Oversees selection, operation, and customization of applications, including student information systems, learning management systems, learning object repositories, customer tracking, web and social media systems, financial systems, and other applications as needed throughout Michigan Virtual.
Oversees the selection, operation, and maintenance of organizational hardware and software systems, including cloud-based services, central Michigan Virtual systems, desktop systems, and mobile systems.
Oversees data gathering, data analysis, and information reporting functions to assure the needed information is available, on a timely basis, with integrity insured and that it represents what it is purported to represent, as appropriate for Michigan Virtual staff, Michigan Virtual customers and others.
Oversees system standards, information access and control, and security systems and procedures to assure access and availability for the intended users, as well as, encompassing procedures and preventing security breaches, testing/auditing of those procedures, identifying any breaches that take place, and rapid resolution.
Establishes and manages strategic vendor and partner relationships and ensures the organization is aware of and prepared for changes in technology.
Interacts with customers to assess their product and service needs and works across Michigan Virtual to share, understand and prioritize those needs.
Communicates to the primary interest groups in the educational technology community and the IT community a clear and concise understanding of Michigan Virtual, including its activities, products and services, mission and vision.
Interface with Michigan Virtual’s external users and customers by adopting a customer-centric approach.
Oversees IT vendor relationships and IT licenses for the organization, including technical reviews, RFPs, and negotiations.
Master’s Degree in Information Science, Information Security, Information Technology, Computer Science and/or 8 years of equivalent education and relevant experience.
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE (minimum requirements):
8 years of experience in an organization-wide leadership role involving two or more of the following areas of IT: security systems management, staff management, applications development and management, information management, or infrastructure management.
8 years of experience supervising a group of at least 10 staff working in IT applications, information systems, or IT security.
8 years of experience in developing and monitoring annual budgets.
5 years of experience in K-12, higher education, and/or online education.
5 years managing a Microsoft Operating Systems and Applications environment or equivalent.
5 years experience working with contracted services and contract employees.
Significant experience with managing learning management systems or talent management systems.
Significant experience with non-profit accounting methods and federal A133 audit compliance.
Demonstrated ability to develop staff skills and performance, with an emphasis on facilitating teamwork and effective work in cross-functional teams.
Proven problem-solving skills that demonstrate the ability to identify, analyze, and resolve conflicts and problems. Demonstrated leadership and decision-making ability to balance competing objectives, carefully evaluate potential risks, assess alternatives before making commitments, and act early to minimize critical problems.
Demonstrated professional relationships and ongoing learning to maintain a current understanding of best practices, emerging issues, and future trends in the directed areas.
Demonstrated strong work ethic.
Demonstrated superior abilities in verbal and written communication skills.
