The Learning and Literacy Specialist is a key member of the LS Student Support Team, which consists of the educational psychologist, speech/language therapists, literacy specialist, counselor and EAL teacher. This role will primarily serve children in grades K2 and G1; some have identified mild-moderate learning disabilities and others are “flex” students who receive short-term intervention support in reading in small groups or individually.
Summary of duties
Provide direct remedial service to children, 4-7 times per cycle, both inclusion and pull-out
Write AIEPs for each student in the Specific Learning disabilities program write student reports per term and enter up- to-date information on the K-12 Student Support Services database
Conduct formal and informal assessments, collate and enter scores into database
Liaise and collaborate with classroom teachers, other specialists, and parents regularly
Serve as referral liaison and differentiation consultant to a specific grade level and classes
Participate actively in all Lower School andK12 Student Support Team meetings
Take responsibility for the safety and well-being of all students at all times
Participate in regular, purposeful pedagogy meetings and in professional development sessions
Participate actively in the life of the School, through attendance at events, committee membership and leadership of extracurricular activities
Any other duties as are within the scope, spirit and purpose of the job as requested by the Principal
Administer assessments for admissions and participate in file reviews

Selection criteria:
Essential qualifications/experience:
Degree or certification in Special Education, Reading Specialist or related field
Substantive and demonstrable teaching experience in lower school
Outstanding collaborative skills and a desire to work in a team-focused environment
Recent significant training in the identification and support of language-based learning disabilities
Significant recent professional development in the Science of Reading, current intervention programs, assessments and Wilson?
Demonstrably strong oral and written communication skills
Excellent technology skills; up-to-date knowledge of current trends in classroom technology
Training and experience in cultural competency initiatives to support diversity, equity and inclusion in the classroom and workplace, and the ability to meet the needs of students with diverse backgrounds and needs
Willingness to contribute to school life outside of the classroom
A proven commitment to the safeguarding and welfare of children
Desirable qualifications/experience:
Substantive and demonstrable teaching experience, preferably in a similar role
Experience as a member of a multidisciplinary team
