SUPERINTENDENT VACANCY
ALEXANDRIA CITY PUBLIC SCHOOLS
ALEXANDRIA, VIRGINIA
Alexandria City is a suburb of Washington, D.C. that has a long history of serving children with publicly-funded schools. The Alexandria Academy was originally the home of the Washington Free School, founded in 1785 for the purpose of educating orphans and poor children. It was funded in part by George Washington, with a $4,000 bequest in his will.
Alexandria City Public Schools serve more than 16,000 students who hail from more than 118 countries and speak 127 language languages. ACPS has 18 schools including two middle schools, two K-8 schools, one pre-K school, and an internationally recognized Alexandria City High School.
The mission of the Alexandria City Public Schools is to nurture, educate and inspire each student for success. The vision is that each student is prepared to thrive in college, career and community. The core values include being welcoming, equity-focused, empowering, innovative and results-driven.
The goals for ACPS include:
Creating safe, caring, inclusive environments where students feel supported and respected.
Engaging and challenging every student to achieve academic excellence. Recruiting, developing, and retaining a diverse and talented team of professionals.
Cultivating trust through clear communication and community engagement.
Preparing students for life after high school with the skills, guidance and opportunities for success.
The focus of the ACPS is about equity, empowerment and inspiring students to thrive. ACPS places racial equity at the center of everything that we do as a school division. This challenges us to ensure our students are engaged in classroom instruction and have access to the educational resources needed to enhance their learning experiences. We will ensure that our schools are a safe, friendly and welcoming environment for all. We set clear division-wide priorities and programs to address opportunity and achievement gaps as well as make sure that all students graduate ready for college, careers and life. Our vision is big and bold, and the potential is enormous.
The ACPS Board seeks an innovative educational leader who ensures an excellent educational experience for every student in the division and is ready to become an integral part of the community. The successful applicant must have demonstrated exemplary educational leadership experience in a community with similar strengths, demographics, and challenges.
Candidates must have or be immediately eligible for a Virginia DOE 8 VAC 20 Division Superintendent License. A multi-year contract will be offered in a salary range of $305,000 per annum subject to actual qualifications, experience and negotiations. All interested candidates should apply through the link on this website. Applications will be received through August 12, 2026. Anticipated appointment date is on or around October 1, 2026.
